'Bedu pako bara masa' is one of the most iconic songs of Uttarakhand folk music.
The song talks about the cultural heritage of uttarakhand and it's natural beauty, becoming an identity now of an entire state. It was written by Brijendra Pal Shah and later revived and composed by Mohan Upreti in the early 50's.
It not only represents the folk music and heritage of uttarakhand but also the pride and valour of the Kumaon Regiment as it is the official song of the kumaonis.
The song reflects the life in Uttarakhand, mixing the natural essence and emotions into a musical blend. Although the literal meaning of the song is about nature, how 'bedu' (fig) are available throughout the year but 'kafal' ripens only in chait(spring).
But it also contains a deep metaphorical meaning of life, how in our everyday life (which is like bedu, available throughout the year), we only get a chance to celebrate and enjoy special moments which comes once in a while like kafal ripening in chaitra only. The month of Chaitra is considered auspicious as it is the start of the Hindu new year and also the season where tree sheds the old leaves to grow new one marking a new beginning in life.
The song which earlier used to be sung on festivals and family occasions has now become an identity of an entire state, uniting the people of uttarakhand by music, culture and heritage.
